About this artist

Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in 1931 and died in 1996. He was undisputedly the leading figure in modern Haitian painting. He joined the Centre d"art in 1947. Gourgue had his own distinguishable style, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and Vodou symbolism in a surrealistic way. His art was exhibited in the Museum of Modern Art in N.Y, including at the Sothebys and Christies auction houses, Europe, North America, and Latin America.
