Description

This painting was done a couple of months prior to the earthquake and the title and image were rather ominous. It is an abstract composition with the woman's face in profile, breasts and hand outlined in yellow pigment; a sword outlines in yellow above. The background is rendered in hues of umber and grey with a bright green vertical stripe on the left side. It is enclosed in a wood frame having an inner gilt fillet.

"The Earthquake" Collection is a series of five paintings created by one of the most celebrated Haitian contemporary artist, Philippe Dodard. The works are typical of the artist's oeuvre of Expressionist compositions that make political and social implications; hieroglyphics with hidden meanings; in this case the earthquake that devastated Haiti. The artist's use of great color intensity magnifies the emotion.
